Getting Started
How will I start?
All of our clients start with an initial one on one needs analysis where we find out as much health and fitness information as possible about you. The way we look at it the more information we have the better job we will do in putting together the right program for you. So we ask a lot of questions. We also do a postural assessment and look at some muscle balance analysis also. Nothing is too scary in this first session though. You will walk away having a good idea of where you are at, and a clear picture of what you need to do to get to your desired results and goals.
We don't sugar coat things. We are honest and realistic, and will set you up with an appropriate program for your level.
Depending on your preferences this may mean weight training, cardio vascular conditioning, yoga, pilates or any combination.
We recomment clients start with some personal training or private instruction, and as such all our gym members are given 3 PT sessions when they join. This is to educate our members on how to get the most out of their sessions and their time in the gym.
How often should I come?
At Fitness by Design we believe the body should move every single day. Our bodies are designed to be active and we recommend doing some form of activity or exercise each day of the week. The general public have decided that three days a week for about an hour is the right amount to come to the gym yet we don't agree.
We will work with you to plan out how often you should do your program - it may be 2 -5 times per week depending on a number of variables including your current level of fitness, times, goals, body weight, and other activity levels.
How long before I see results?
We expect that all our clients who commit their time, and learn the lessons that our trainers teach will see almost immediate results. Your first six weeks is devoted to building healthy habits around food, exercise and sleep, and if this is followed then you can expect to see good results within that first six weeks.
Please remember - you get out of your sessions what you put into them! Clients who come even as infrequently as once a week, but who concentrate for the full session and "give it their all," see more improvements than clients who come more regularly but don't make the full effort when they are here.
I am older - can I still do exercise or Pilates?
Absolutely! Just keep moving safely! We have a number of clients over 60 who are members of the gym, pilates clinets, and/or Personal Training clients. Whether your goal is to loosen up your shoulder joint so that you can reach that top shelf, or simply to play with your grandchildren without lower back pain, we can help you safely achieve your goals.
I am pregnant - can I still exercise?
WITH DOCTOR'S PERMISSION! If you have been doing exercise and become pregnant after starting, it is usually considered safe to continue what you have been doing. However, it is recommended that you check with your doctor, as every pregnancy is different. Many pregnant clients continue working out right up to delivery day and come back soon after the birth, but you need to find out what is best for your body.
I have an injury - can I still come?
Yes. Fitness by Design is probably one of the best place you can be. We have a qualified practicing physiotherapist on staff who oversees all gym programs and personal training clients. Similarly our pilates instructors are well versed in injury rehab - one of them is a qualified physio from Brazil.
We can design a program that does not aggravate any current injuries, and in time, can help to improve your body's resistance to injury.
